Archives Week 2003 (October 12-18, 2003)

Immigrant Wisconsin

From the arrival of Wisconsin's first human inhabitants to naturalization ceremonies for our newest foreign-born citizens, immigration to Wisconsin has played a significant role in the state's history. In fact, Wisconsin, often called "the most ethnic state," has always been home to a broad array of groups from other countries. Archives Week 2003 takes place October 12-18 and recognizes the importance of immigrants and immigration in Wisconsin history with the theme, "Immigrant Wisconsin."

This year's focus on immigrants in Wisconsin intentionally parallels the 2004 National History Day theme of "Exploration, Encounter and Exchange." We want to encourage Archives Week activities that help teachers and students who participate in the National History Day program to learn more about archives and the primary sources that they collect. Through historical records such as immigrant diaries, journals, letters, census records, passenger lists, photographs, naturalization records and many more, students can use archives to research the mingling of native and foreign-born populations in Wisconsin and develop their NHD projects.

Though students and teachers have special opportunities this year, Archives Week is for everyone. It is a chance for institutions statewide that create, keep, or use historical records to show off these treasures through all kinds of public programs aimed at their own users, donors, and communities.

This Web page provides program ideas, links to historical resources about immigration, and a list of Archives Week events around Wisconsin. For program ideas, check out our activity suggestions. Publicize your program by adding it to the events schedule. View a list of historical resources and find both primary and secondary sources about immigrants and immigration in Wisconsin.

To help you publicize Archives Week and the program you develop for it, we offer both the free poster that illustrates our 2003 Web page and this year's Archives Week Planning Guide. To get your copies, or to get help with planning Archives Week in your community, contact Nicki Saylor.
