Wisconsin History Explorer
Hit the Road, and its companion Are We There Yet? are a cooperative project between the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation ( WisDOT). They are a product of Section 106 mitigation funded by the WisDOT.
The State Trunk Highway 33 improvement project in Allenton, Washington County, required the removal of the historic Van Beek Filling Station, which was determined to be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. To mitigate the loss of this property, WisDOT funded five Web stories detailing the development of transportation networks and roadside property types in Wisconsin.
Architectural historians from Mead & Hunt wrote the text included in the pages and collected current and historic images. Graphic designers from Mead & Hunt were responsible for the design and layout.
Special thanks to Jim Draeger of the State Historic Preservation Office and Bob Newbery of the WisDOT, and John Wm. and Alice Ridge for sharing their historic photo collections.
