of Steel
y the late 1800s, illustrations
of Civil War battles had settled into the tradition of
grand history paintings and were ripe for advertising
use. Taking advantage of popular interest in the
subject, the McCormick Company issued a series of Civil
War posters. This one associates McCormick products with
the technological innovation of the ironclad naval
ships, Monitor and Merrimac.
