The Image Takes Command

ithographs were composed by drawing pictures and text directly onto printing stones or plates with oily chalk. In printing, a different plate was used for each color of ink. This direct drawing process gave poster artists more freedom and flexibility. They increasingly placed images in central, dominant locations, and varied the placement of text, overlapping or integrating it into the image as they wished.
