he theme of progress occurs over
and over in nineteenth-century advertising, but it is
rarely stated as directly as in this small poster. Inset
views of obsolete harvesting technologies helped portray
the Marsh Harvester as the pinnacle of mechanical genius
and the foundation of rural prosperity. The Marsh
Harvester itself would be superseded within a decade by
the twine binder.
