Bulletins
from the Battle Front
n the 1880s and 1890s,
competition among implement makers became known as the
Binder Wars. After each new field trial, the victorious
manufacturer boasted of its latest triumph in hastily
printed posters that it distributed locally. Losers
sometimes produced posters as well, condemning the
judges, test conditions and the products and business
practices of their rivals.
