Book Discussion in Menomonie with Bill Matthias, Author of 'Monster Fire at Minong: Wisconsin's Five Mile Tower Fire of 1977'
Thirty-three years ago one of the largest wildfires in Wisconsin history raged out of control for 17 hours through the Wisconsin Northwoods. As a column of black pine smoke reached high in the sky, citizens from Minong, Chicog, Webster, Gordon, Wascott, Hayward, Solon Springs, and other communities began showing up to battle the blaze. Come and learn about this "Monster Fire" and the brave citizens who fought it as author Bill Matthias gives a firsthand account of the event.
"Monster Fire at Minong: Wisconsin's Five Mile Tower Fire of 1977" tells the story of the fire that scorched 13,000 acres and destroyed 63 buildings. The book also discusses important changes that have been made to firefighting laws and procedures.
