1860s Jams and Jellies
Lend a hand to help create flavorful jams and jellies as they were made more than 150 years ago. The event represents a throwback to the stagecoach inn's own history. Mid-August is exactly the time of year that the Wade House household staff would have been busy preserving fruits that were ripening. The inn's historic cook, Betsy Urven, will be making jams and jellies from raspberries picked on the Wade House grounds. She'll be using a 19th-century recipe and sealing the jars with brandy-soaked paper rounds and five layers of tissue paper. When the tissue paper is given an egg wash, it dries tighter than a drum.
Ticket Info: Adults $11; children (5-17) $5.50; students and senior citizens (65 and over) $9.25; family (two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) $30. Horse-drawn transportation on the site included in ticket cost.
Location Description: Wade House, an 1860s stagecoach inn built to serve traffic along the plank road that connected Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, tells the story of frontier entrepreneur Sylvanus Wade and his family during the Civil War years. In addition to the inn, the historic site includes the recently reconstructed Herrling sawmill, one of the few working, water-powered sawmills of its kind in the nation. Wade House is also home to the Wesley Jung Carriage Museum, which houses the state's largest collection of antique carriages and working wagons.
