A Schooner Songbag: Songs of the Great Lakes
Wisconsin folksinger and songsmith David HB Drake presents the life and times and music of a 19th-century Great Lakes sailor in "A Schooner Songbag." Drake sings and spins yarns about the hardships and livings made by the men of the lakes, including songs and tales used in the days of the schooners. David will answer questions in the character of a historic seaman and as a modern sailor comparing today's life on the lakes and rivers to when Wisconsin first became a state.
Drake has been the resident musician for Pier Wisconsin and Wisconsin's flagship, the three-masted schooner Denis Sullivan. He has served as shantyman, interpreter, crew and performer aboard numerous tall ships on the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Great Lakes, including the HMS Bounty, seen in the movie "Mutiny on the Bounty."
This concert is part of the museum's celebration of Wisconsin Museums Week, 2012: May 12 – 20 and is presented in conjunction with the
Ghost Ships of the Schooner Coast exhibit now on display.
