Book Release Party in La Crosse for 'Bottoms Up: A Toast to Wisconsin's Bars and Breweries'

"Bottoms Up: A Toast to Wisconsin's Historic Bars and Breweries" celebrates Wisconsin's taverns and the breweries that fueled them. Beginning with inns and saloons, the new book explores the rise of taverns and breweries, the effects of temperance and Prohibition, and attitudes about gender, ethnicity and morality. The book features 70 taverns and breweries from around the state.

Join the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Public Television for this special celebration. Meet authors Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz, and receive your signed copy of the new book, published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Plus view a special sneak preview of Wisconsin Public Television's Bottom's Up companion documentary. Space is limited, and advance ticketing is required. To reserve tickets, contact the membership office at 888-748-7479 or via email.

Jim Draeger is an architectural historian and deputy state historic preservation officer at the Wisconsin Historical Society with more than 25 years of historic preservation experience. From roadside architecture to Northwoods resorts, Draeger celebrates the importance of ordinary buildings to our daily lives through his research, writing and lectures.

Mark Speltz is a senior historian at American Girl. He previously worked as an independent researcher on exhibits for museums, including the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, and has written several articles for the "Wisconsin Magazine of History."

In addition to this event, you can continue celebrating Wisconsin's historic bars and breweries this fall with the Wisconsin Historical Museum's "Bottom's Up" companion exhibit and Wisconsin Public Television's companion documentary airing in November.
