Crescent Bay Hunt Club: A Wisconsin Oneota Site in Jefferson County
This program will describe the analysis of stone tools from the Crescent Bay Hunt Club site (47-Je-904), a late prehistoric Oneota site near Lake Koshkonong in Jefferson County. The majority of the stone tools are simple flake tools whose function is not easily determined based on shape and size.
A combination of low-power and high-power microscopic use-wear analyses provided clues to the function of these flake tools. This analysis of the stone tools, including projectile points, knives and scraping tools identified the multiple functions of the tools and challenges assumptions about late prehistoric Oneota sites in Wisconsin. A more detailed understanding of Oneota chronology and subsistence strategies resulted from these studies.
