Bringing the Civil War Home to Wisconsin
Join the FRIENDS of the Wisconsin Historical Society on a three-day bus tour of the state's many significant Civil War-related sites and visits to special events commemorating the sesquicentennial of the historic conflict. The first leg of the journey begins at Madison's ShopKo East parking lot and includes stops at Forest Hill Cemetery
and the Wisconsin Historical Society for a behind-the-scenes look at Civil War artifacts. Other stops on the first day include a tour of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum
and an evening program at The Butterfly Club
in Beloit featuring a presentation on the popular Civil War book, 'Letters Home to Sarah'
by authors Kevin and Patsy Alderson.
Day two of the tour begins with a tour of the Milton House Museum
, which during the Civil War served as a documented station on the Underground Railroad. Then it's on to Kenosha to visit the Kenosha Civil War Museum
and a program on Cordelia Harvey
, who came to be known as "Wisconsin's Civil War Angel." Day two's dinner destination is the Fox & Hounds Restaurant and Tavern
in Hubertus and a Civil War fashion show to follow.
Day three begins with a trip to Wade House
and a tour of the historic site's brand new Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum. After a lunch break, tour participants will take in the sites and sounds of Wisconsin's largest Civil War encampment and battle re-enactment during the Wade House Civil War Weekend
. The tour ends with a return trip to Madison.
