Miriam Bennett's 'A Study in Reds'
The Friends of H.H. Bennett will show Miriam Bennett's "A Study in Reds" as a fundraiser and offer DVDs for sale on Wednesday, June 19, at the Masonic Temple in Wisconsin Dells. A polished amateur film by the daughter of H.H. Bennett, "A Study in Reds" satirizes women's clubs and the Soviet menace in the 1930s. While listening to a tedious lecture on the Soviet Union, a Wisconsin Dells Tuesday Club member falls asleep and finds herself and other members laboring in an all-women collective under the unflinching eye of the Soviet police. In 2009 the film was named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant and will be preserved for all time.
