The Wisconsin Historical Society, Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, and The Capital Times proudly present this series of Hollywood movies adapted from classic books of the 19th and 20th centuries. Read the books, and then see the movies — on the big screen! This cooperative film series draws upon the collections of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research. The fifth and final year of the Classic Book and Movie Club is devoted to an all Jane Austen year.
Pride and Prejudice
Beginning April 13, 2008, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Emily Auerbach will introduce the Keira Knightley and Donald Sutherland version of Pride and Prejudice from 2005. The discussion will also reference Laurence Olivier's 1940 version of the film and India's "Bollywood" version called Bride and Prejudice.
Sense and Sensibility
On September 14, 2008, UW-Madison professor Caroline Levine will discuss director Ang Lee's 1995 award-winning film, Sense and Sensibility, featuring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman.
Persuasion
To round out the season, on January 18, 2009, retired UW-Madison professor Joseph Wiesenfarth will discuss the 1995 BBC film, Persuasion, featuring Ciarán Hinds and Amanda Root.
Each film will be presented at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Wisconsin Historical Society, 816 State Street. Following each film will be a discussion highlighting the book from which each film has been adapted. Reading the book before seeing the movie is encouraged but not required.
Admission to all the screenings is FREE to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
