The Big Sleep (1946)

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
starred in this 1946 mystery classic.
Raymond Chandler's 1939 mystery classic, adapted for the big screen
by William Faulkner, introduced the world to the dashing
sleuth Philip Marlowe, a shadowy role played splendidly
by Humphrey Bogart. His onscreen chemistry with Lauren
Bacall as the wealthy daughter of a dying man complements
the convoluted but thoroughly enteraining plot. Film
noir at its best, the movie was directed by Howard
Hawks. (114 minutes)
This film will be presented in the auditorium of the Wisconsin Historical
Society, 816 State Street, Madison, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday,
September 19, 2004. Admission
to all the screenings is free to the public on a first-come,
first-serve basis.
