This film was the first screen rendition of Ernest Hemingway's classic 1927 tale of war and romance. Set in World War I Italy, the film explores the ill-fated relationship of an American ambulance driver and a British nurse. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, and the cinematography of Charles Lang won an Oscar. Screenplay by Oliver H. P. Garrett and Benjamin Blazer. Directed by Frank Borzage. (78 minutes)

This film will be presented in the auditorium of the Wisconsin Historical Society, 816 State Street, Madison, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2004. Admission to all the screenings is free to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
