Jane Eyre (1944)

Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine
starred in the Hollywood version
of the Charlotte Bronte classic.
Widely regarded as the
best cinema version of Charlotte Bronte's 1847 classic
novel, the movie starred Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine
in a tale that's part mystery, part romance. Set in
19th-century England, a young orphan (Fontaine) comes
of age and enters domestic service as a governess in
the imposing estate of her employer Rochester (Welles),
with whom she quickly falls in love. Complete with
a madwoman held captive in one of the castle's towers
by the darkly tempestuous Rochester, the film also
stars Elizabeth Taylor in one of her earliest roles.
Screenplay by John Houseman and Leigh Brackett. Directed
by Robert Stevenson. (96 minutes)
This film will be presented in the auditorium of the Wisconsin Historical
Society, 816 State Street, Madison, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday,
January 23, 2005. Admission to all the screenings is free
to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
