Historic Diaries: Floyd 1804

May 14, 1804

Editor's Note:

After wintering on the Illinois side of the Mississippi, the expedition headed up the Missouri River on the 14th. Capt. Lewis stayed behind in St. Louis to make final arrangements, intending to catch up a few days later in St. Charles. Floyds spelling of both English and French is inconsistent, and he routinely writes the same words in a variety of creative ways. Batteau" is French for boat and "Pirogue for canoe, which by extension was often applied to any small boat.
