This day they passed Cow Island, or Isle de Vache, a landmark for travellers. Here the French had had a trading post as early as 1757, mentioned by Edwin James in 1819 (American Journeys document AJ-144a). Later councils with Indian nations were often held here as the U.S. government established forts along the Missouri.

Set out verry erley this morning under a Jentel Breas from the South. found a Stray Horse on the South Side, how Had Ben Lost for Some time. water verry Strong, So Hard that we Could Hardley Stem it. Came 10 miles. Campt on the South Side. the Land is verry mirey.
