Editor's Note:
Today a historic marker is all that remains of the Omaha village of Tonwontonga. Two thirds of its inhabitants had succombed to smallpox in 1800, and the expedition found only 300 burned shells of houses.
Monday august 13th
Set out verry erley this morning. prosed on under a Jentel Brees from the South-Est. Sailed. morning Clouday. about 10 o.c. it Cleared up. we arrived at the Mahas [Omaha's] village about 2 oclock P m. Sent Som of ouer men to Se if aney of the natives was at Home. thay Returnd, found none of them at Home.
