Historic Diaries: James Doty, 1820

July 15, 1820: Reunited at Sandy Lake

Editor's Note:

Schoolcraft, with one of the clerks of the company and 16 local Indians, went downriver to meet the rest of the expedition, who had come up by water via the St. Louis and Mississippi. On pages 219-222 of his book, he summarizes what the governor's party had experienced while he and Doty were wading through the swamps on foot.

His account of the day's trip includes a description of the village of the Sandy Lake Ojibwe, which numbered about 120 people, and pages 222-234 consist of his general summary of the Ojibwe bands and their way of life, including economy, gender roles, customs, language, and more. Doty covered many of the same subjects, as well as the geography of the region, in his official report of the expedition, online here.

Location: modern Big Sandy Lake Reservoir, Aitkin Co. Minn.

The Gov. arrived this afternoon. He appeared nearly overcome with heat and fatigue.
