Historic Diaries: Emily Quiner, 1863

July 17, 1863: A Visit to the State Agent

Editor's Note:

Mr. Smith's office: Wisconsin Governor Edward Salomon praised the agents' work in these words: "Regular and accurate information has constantly been furnished by them to the people of the State, of the sick and wounded soldiers in the several hopitals; the agents have attended to the wants of the sick…; they have seen that abuses in hospitals were brought to the attention of the proper authorities and remedied…" Political opponents, on the other hand, charged that they were just a way for Republicans to give jobs to supporters and, after soldiers in camp were given the ballot, to recruit new votes for their party.

Friday 17th

Went to my ward as usual. Did not feel very well today. A little blue. I shall have to go out more. Fanny, Louise & I went up to Mr. Smith's office this morning. It rained after we got home. In my ward the rest of the day. Tired tonight, glad to get to my room.
