Term: Broughton, Charles Elmer 1873 - 1956

Definition:

newspaperman, politician, b. Lamartine. He attended business school and learned the printer's trade on various newspapers. He was editor of the Campbellsport News (1903-1907), and worked for several years as an editor of the Sheboygan Press. In 1913 he became editor and publisher of the Press and served in this capacity until 1952. During his tenure as editor Broughton was given honorable mention for a Pulitzer prize (1935) and was noted for his support of conservation and opposition to prohibition. He was also instrumental in restoring the Sheboygan marsh. A Democrat, he was an ardent supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving as a member of the Democratic national committee (1932-1941). He was chairman of the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (1938-1951), president of radio station WHBL (1952-1956), a director of the North Shore Land Company and the Kingsberry Brewing Company, and for many years a curator of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
