Term: Heine, Freidrich Wilhelm 1845 - 1921

Definition: artist, b. Leipsig, Germany. In Germany Heine worked as a copper and steel engraver and was also a sketch artist during the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. Because of his success with battle art, he was asked to come to Milwaukee, and arrived in 1885 to direct a group of German artists engaged in producing panoramas of Civil War and Biblical scenes. The mass-produced panoramas sometimes measured 50 by 375 feet, and for a time were extremely popular at fairs and exhibitions and as exhibits at public buildings. During the short-lived popularity of panoramic painting, Milwaukee was known as the panorama center of the country. When the demand for such painting lessened, Heine established a private studio in Milwaukee. There he painted and gave art instruction until his death. H. L. Canard, ed., Hist. of Milwaukee (3 vols., Chicago [1896]); P. Butts, Art in Wis. (Madison, 1936); Milwaukee Journal, Aug. 28, 1921.
