Term: Civil War: 3rd Cavalry
Definition:
The 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry was organized at Milwaukee between November 1861-January 1862. It left for St. Louis, Missouri, March 26-28, 1862, and was assigned to frontier and provost duty in Kansas before moving into Arkansas. It spent much of the war moving back and forth among the three states on expeditions. It participated in the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, and in Blount's Campaign in Missouri and Arkansas. The regiment lost 217 men during service. Three officers and 61 enlisted men were. Six officers and 147 enlisted men died from disease.
