Definition:
The 42nd Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Randall in Madison and mustered into service on September 7, 1864. From Madison the regiment moved to Cairo, Illinois, September 20-22, 1864. It was assigned to post and garrison duty at Cairo and provost duty by detachments at various points in Illinois until June 1865. It was mustered out of service on June 20. The regiment lost 58 men from disease.
