Term: Civil War: 44th Infantry Regiment
Definition:
The 44th Infantry Regiment was organized by companies at Camp Randall in Madison and was mustered into United States service during the months of October and November in 1864. Companies were ordered to Nashville as quickly as possible. Companies "A," "B," "C," "D," and "F" reached Nashville during October and November. Regimental organization was finally completed by February of 1865. The regiment served in Tennessee and in Kentucky and participated in the Battle of Nashville as well as garrison and guard duty at Nashville and duty at Paducah, Kentucky. The regiment mustered out of active service August 28, 1865. The regiment lost during service 1 officer and 57 Enlisted men by disease. Total 58.
