Definition:

Mock awards presented each month by Wisconsin Sen. William Proxmire, 1975-1987, to identify what he viewed as wasteful government spending. Proxmire sent his first press release announcing a Golden Fleece Award in March 1975 and ultimately presented 159 of the awards. Digital copies of his press releases, 1975-1987, are included at Turning Points in Wisconsin History, along with a 12-page list of all 159 awards and miscellaneous complementary documents.
