Term: Williams, Charles Grandison 1829 - 1892

Definition: lawyer, politician, Congressman, b. Royalton, N.Y. He attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in Lima, N.Y., and studied law in Rochester. In 1856 he moved to Wisconsin, settling in Janesville, where he was admitted to the bar and set up a law practice. A Republican, Williams was state senator (1869-1872). In 1872 he was elected to Congress, was four times re-elected, and served from Mar., 1873, to Mar., 1883. Defeated for re-election in 1882, Williams moved to Watertown, S.D.
