Term: Whittet, Lawrence Clarke 1871 - 1954

Definition:

businessman, farmer, politician, state and federal administrator, b. Albion, Dane County. In 1882 he moved with his parents to a farm near Edgerton, and later attended the Univ. of Wisconsin, but did not graduate. A member of the Stalwart or conservative faction of the Republican party, Whittet was state assemblyman (1909-1910, 1915-1918), and was speaker of the assembly during his last two terms. A close friend and adviser of Governor Emanuel L. Philipp (q.v.), Whittet was his private secretary (1915-1921), and on Philipp's recommendation served as executive secretary of the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce (1921-1925). Whittet later served by appointment from President Franklin D. Roosevelt as state administrator for the N.R.A. and as commissioner for the Wisconsin Recovery Act (1933- 1935). From 1935 to 1949 he was a member of the Fair Trades Practices Commission, and from 1942 until his death was curator of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. R. S. Maxwell, E. L. Philipp . . .
