Definition:

Methodist Episcopal clergyman, college president, b. Fulton County, N.Y. He moved with his parents to Wisconsin in 1860. He attended Milton College, and graduated from Lawrence College (B.A., 1880) and Boston Univ. (S.T.B., 1883; Ph.D., 1886). Plantz was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal ministry in 1885 and except for a year spent in Europe (1890-1891), served pastorates in the Detroit, Mich., area (1885-1892). In 1894 he returned to Wisconsin to become president of Lawrence College (called Lawrence Univ. until 1913) at Appleton. During Plantz's administration (1894-1924) at Lawrence, new buildings and increased resources were secured, pre-college instruction was ended, and students of college standing grew in numbers from 77 to 843. Plantz continued his activities in the church, and became nationally recognized as a Methodist Episcopal church leader. He was the author of The Church and the Social Problem (1906), in which he sought to apply the principles of Christian ethics to modern economic and industrial life. Who Was Who in Amer. (1943); Lawrence Alumni Record (Appleton, 1922); Year Book Wis. Ann. Conf. Meth. Episc. Church, 79 (1925), pp. 353-355.
