Definition: mayor, b. Milwaukee. He graduated from Marquette Univ. (Ph.D., 1929; J.D., 1931). He was assistant city attorney for Milwaukee (1936-1940), resigning in 1940 to run as an independent against veteran Socialist Mayor Daniel W. Hoan. On Dec. 11, 1942, he was reported missing in South American waters as commander of a gun crew on a merchant vessel, and was officially presumed dead Nov. 2, 1944. Milwaukee Journal, Nov. 9, 1942; Who Was Who in Amer. (1950); F. L. Holmes, et al., eds., Wis. (5 vols., Chicago, 1946).
