Term: Zeidler, Carl Frederick 1908 - 1942

Definition: mayor, b. Milwaukee. He graduated from Marquette Univ. (Ph.D., 1929; J.D., 1931). He was assistant city attorney for Milwaukee (1936-1940), resigning in 1940 to run as an independent against veteran Socialist Mayor Daniel W. Hoan. Zeidler's upset victory was attributed to attraction for youth, vigorous campaigning, and extensive friendships among civic, fraternal, and church groups. In Apr., 1942, Mayor Zeidler was granted a leave of absence to become Lt. (j.g.) in the U.S.N.R. On Dec. 11, 1942, he was reported missing in South American waters as commander of a gun crew on a merchant vessel, and was officially presumed dead Nov. 2, 1944.
