(Dem.) born Brandon, Wis. June 16, 1901. Educated Brandon public schools. Attended Lawrence College 2 years. Received Ph.D. in 1924 from Univ. of Wisconsin. For 14 years in retail lumber, feed, and coal business. In 1941 received LL.B. from U.W. Law School. Practiced law in Black River Falls. Delegate to 1952 and 1960 Democratic National Conventions. Elected Assembly Chief Clerk as Progressive 1935 and 1937. Elected Jackson County district attorney as Progressive 1942 and 1944, as Democrat 1952. Elected to Congress in special election Oct. 13, 1953, to fill vacancy caused by death of Merlin Hull; now in 6th consecutive term. Member House Committee on Agriculture; in 1959 named chairman Dairy and Poultry Sub-committee, now Dairy Subcommittee. Home address: Black River Falls. (Blue Book 1964)
