Term: Adams, Charles Kendall 1835 - 1902

Definition:

historian, university president, b. Derby, Vt. He moved to a farm near Denmark, Ia., with his parents in 1856. After graduating from the Univ. of Michigan in 1861 (M.A., 1862), he became an assistant professor there in history and Latin (1863-1867) and professor of history (1867-1885). He studied educational methods in Europe (1867-1868) and later used the German seminar system of instruction. In 1881 he was appointed dean of the school of political science at Michigan. He was a history lecturer at Cornell Univ., and president 1885-1892, when he resigned with the intention of devoting his time to writing. During the same year, however, he was persuaded to become president of the Univ. of Wisconsin, a position that he held until 1901, when he was forced to retire because of ill health. During his presidency he carried out much of the building program that had been formulated by his predecessor, President Chamberlin (q.v.). The armory and the law building were completed in 1893, and the state historical building was completed and occupied in 1900. He was also an enthusiastic proponent of a vigorous intercollegiate athletic program, and of social activity by the students. He wrote Democracy and Monarchy in France (1874), Manual of Historical Literature (1882), Christopher Columbus (1892), and, in co-operation with W. P. Trent, A History of the United States (1903). He also edited a collection of representative British orations, and served as editor-in-chief of the revision of Johnson's Cyclopaedia. M. Curti and V. Carstensen, Univ. of Wis. (2 vols., Madison, 1949); Dict. Amer. Biog.; Madison Wis. State Journal, July 28, 1902; C. F. Smith, C. K. Adams (Madison, 1924); R. G. Thwaites, Univ. of Wis. (Madison, 1900).
