Term: Beloit [origin of place name]
Definition: Originally called New Albany and later Turtle Creek. A committee was eventually formed and they coined the name Beloit. Members of the committee later admitted that they had been thinking of Detroit at the time. View a related article at Wisconsin Magazine of History Archives.
