Term: Pontiac, Ottawa Chief, 1720?-1769
Definition: the leading figure in a multi-tribal resistance that opposed English occupation of the Northwest and which, by June 1763, had captured all its forts except Detroit; from June to November his Indian forces (including many from Wisconsin) surrounded Detroit but when, much to his disappointment, the French did not support the resistance, he withdrew; see a diary of the Detroit siege at American Journeys (http://www.americanjourneys.org/aj-135/summary/).
