Definition: Indian agent and author; explored Missouri and Arkansas (1817-18) and sources of the Mississippi (1820) before becoming Indian agent for Lake Superior (1822-36) and Michigan commissioner of Indian Affairs (1836-41); wrote a richly detailed volume of Personal Memoirs.
