Term: Earth Day
April 22, 1970, was the nation's first Earth Day. Proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson (q.v.) in 1969, Earth Day was intended to raise environmental consciousness through rallies, symposiums, and discussions on college campuses and in cities across the country.
