Definition:
used loosely to designate German immigrants who came to America in the wake of the suppressed Revolution of 1848, such as Carl Schurz (q.v.) or Mathilde Anneke (q.v.); they typically held liberal political and social views, and many later became active in Republican, anti-slavery, trade union, women's rights, or Socialist causes.
