Definition:
a 19th- and early 20th-c. movement to persuade people to avoid using alcohol, which was viewed by temperance proponents as a chief cause of poverty, violence, and domestic abuse; it culminated in the passage of the 18th Amendment and national prohibition, 1920-1933.
