From Increase Lapham's 1844 Geographical and Topographical Description of Wisconsin:
"The principal rivers in Crawford county, are BAD AXE, which heads about forty miles from Prairie du Chien, and runs into the Mississippi. This stream is rendeved memorable by the fact that the last,and decisive battle with Black Hawk and his band took place at its mouth, on the 2d day of August, 1832."
