Term: Birl (logging)
Definition:
log-rolling: To cause a floating log to rotate by treading upon it to find the water mark. Hence, birling, the logger's game of log rolling often played on log drives. The players stood on the log wearing calked shoes and spun it to see how long the opponent could stay on without being thrown off into the water.
