Private I’s — Reading the Diaries of Historic Figures

Historic diaries let us peek behind closed doors. Textbook generalizations may illuminate history’s broad sweep, but diaries shine a laser beam on the minutia of someone’s actual life. The Historical Society has just begun to share some of its thousands of journals and diaries by posting entries day-by-day at Historic Diaries.

From now through mid-August you can accompany Lewis and Clark as they start across the Great Plains, through the eyes of young Sgt. Charles Floyd. See for yourself the original page of Sgt. Floyd’s diary written 200 years ago today, alongside a typed transcript, editorial notes, and links to further reading. You can even have each day’s entry automatically delivered to your own Web site by clicking “Syndicate This Site” on any page (see http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/syndicate.asp for instructions). So don’t just let a film director or historian tell you what the Lewis and Clark expedition was like. Come along and see for yourself, at Historic Diaries.
