Historic Barns — Preserving Our Agricultural Roots

Owners of historic barns face many challenges: declining farm income, changing farm practices, poor information about available options, and old buildings with deferred maintenance problems. The Wisconsin Historical Society has created a new web site that conveniently organizes barn preservation information in a single place. Owners can discover the history of barns, find assistance in diagnosing their barn problems, and find other barn organizations.

Architectural Historian Jim Draeger says “Barns symbolize the rural heritage of our state and remind us of the contributions of hard working farm families to our collective heritage. The Wisconsin Historical Society is committed to help owners who are willing to reinvest in their old barns.”

The Wisconsin Historical Museum is assisting this effort through a special June to September promotion that gives free barn preservation publications to museum visitors.
