A Winning Partnership Wisconsin Public Television and Us
The Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Public Television have combined their skills and expertise to produce a body of work called the Wisconsin Collection. The Society's significant archival resources and historical expertise, along with WPT's ability to tell stories and to reach statewide audiences, have proved to be a winning combination.
Under the umbrella of the Collection, this successful collaboration has resulted in 52 minute-long vignettes and five programs created for the Sesquicentennial in 1998 plus two 10-episode seasons of Wisconsin Stories and acclaimed stand-alone documentaries such as When Wisconsin Was New France. To date, the partnership has produced 24 hours of Wisconsin history programming.
In 2003 the Society and WPT teamed with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum to create a powerful storytelling force that resulted in a series of four hour-long documentaries, World War II Stories. The four programs are subtitled The Struggle, Europe, The Pacific, and The Homefront. The documentaries are available through the Wisconsin Historical Museum's Store. In addition, the Society commissioned a local teacher to develop lesson plans for secondary school teachers.
We congratulate our partners at Wisconsin Public Television who recently received three Milwaukee Press Club Awards for their work in this series. The 2003 Gridiron Awards for Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism awarded to WPT were:
- Best Documentary First Place for Wisconsin World War II Stories, Part 2-Europe
- Best Documentary Photography First Place for Wisconsin World War II Stories, Part 2-Europe
- Best Web site Design First Place for Wisconsin Stories
Public reaction to the World War II documentary series has been overwhelmingly positive, with many requests for a similarly meaningful and compelling remembrance of the people and stories that reflect Wisconsin's Korean War experiences. As with World War II Stories, Wisconsin Korean War Stories will be a production of the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Public Television in association with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs/Wisconsin Veterans Museum. The project will include one 90-minute documentary, related Internet materials, and educational outreach.
