Discover H. H. Bennett on the Web
For more than 40 years, H. H. Bennett captured the essence of the Wisconsin Dells with his camera. Our new Web pages make it easy to enjoy Bennett's rich legacy. Almost 700 images show the Dells' famous rock formations, lumber rafts on the Wisconsin River, steamboats on the river, natural wonders of Devil's Lake, and members of the Ho-Chunk community. Bennett also traveled widely in the Midwest taking pictures of street and harbor scenes in Milwaukee, the Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the ice carnival in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Among his most unique images are full representations of the Gettysburg and Missionary Ridge Cyclorama paintings. Cycloramas, popular in the 1890s, were monumental paintings in the round depicting major world events. A few paintings, such as the Battle of Gettysburg panorama may still be viewed, but Bennett's representation of the Battle of Missionary Ridge is the only complete version of that work of art known to exist.
