Notes from the Field — Shipwrecks at Maritime Trails
Follow a chronicle of shipwreck exploration as underwater archaeologists from the Historical Society examine several shipwrecks in Lakes Michigan and Superior throughout the summer and fall of 2004 at Notes from the Field.
Working in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association (WUAA), and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Great Lakes WATER Institute, archaeologists describe their work in daily postings of journal entries and photographs. The daily updates include explanations of each step of the fieldwork.
In August, WHS archaeologists will revisit the Lucerne, Pretoria, and Sevona in the Apostle Islands to document long-term site stability utilizing digital photo-mosaic techniques. In September, WHS Archaeologists will head to Jacksonport to document the schooners Cecelia and Perry Hannah, as well as the remains of Reynolds Pier off Lakeside Park. In the fall, WHS archaeologists will be conducting deep water surveys off southeastern Wisconsin utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology.
