Bogart and Bacall in "The Big Sleep"

A free public screening of the 1946 film noir classic, "The Big Sleep," the second presentation in a three-part series of classic movies adapted from classic books, will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 19, in the auditorium of the Historical Society's headquarters building. "The Classic Book and Movie Club" series is a partnership between the Historical Society, the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research and The Capital Times. The series showcases the film archives' rich collections by encouraging participants to read a classic novel, then enjoy a free screening of the movie adapted from the book. Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms kicked off the series in May 2004. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre will be the final screening on Sunday, January 23, 2005. If the series receives sufficient popular support, additional film/book pairings may be considered next year. All screenings begin at 1:30 p.m.
