Hey There, "Big Boy" — Museum Object of the Week

Beginning this week, the Wisconsin Historical Society will showcase objects from its Museum collection in a new Museum Object of the Week web feature. Some of the objects featured on the site will represent artifacts or themes unique to Wisconsin while others, like this week’s inaugural "Big Boy" trade figure, may have broader regional or national significance, as well as a Wisconsin connection.

Some will have associations with prominent historical figures while others will represent ordinary people and everyday life. The appearance of some of the featured objects will be timed to mark significant events in state history. Others will represent recent acquisitions by the Museum.

Like the exhibitions at the State Historical Museum on Madison’s Capitol Square, the artifacts presented on the Museum Object of the Week web page will tell interesting Wisconsin stories. Since the webpage will focus on a single object each week, it will also allow the Museum to share unique artifacts that may not fit well within the themes of larger exhibitions but still contribute to our knowledge about Wisconsin and its people.

The Society also hopes the Museum Object of the Week will encourage web visitors to consider what objects they may have in their homes or businesses which they may be willing to donate to the Museum or suggestions about artifacts they feel the Museum should actively try to acquire.
