And the Oscar Goes To... History Fans!

The Aviator, the big-screen biopic about real-life mogul Howard Hughes, produced by UW-Madison alum Michael Mann, is a heavy favorite at this year's Oscars. The Wisconsin Historical Society was contacted over a year ago by Martin Scorsese's production company Cappa Productions for the actual stills from Hughes' movie Hell's Angels, upon which many of the sets and costumes from the Leonardo DiCaprio film were based.

The film itself is nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (DiCaprio), Actor in a Supporting Role (Alan Alda), Actress in a Supporting Role (Cate Blanchett), Art Direction, Cinematography and Directing (Scorcese).

This, along with all sorts of other material from Wisconsin Historical Images and the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, is a film fan's buried treasure.

The Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research routinely consults with major motion picture companies for historical photographic research and reprints.
